Different patterns of brain activity, known as neural oscillations, are associated with various mental states and can be used to detect a person's thoughts. For example, in a BCI system, a user may be instructed to think about calling 911, which will generate a specific pattern of brain activity that the BCI system can detect and interpret as a command to follow through with the order.
Through researching the most effective point of contact of the BCI system, one of the most promising applications of BCI in neurology is in the field of paralysis. Patients with spinal cord injuries or other forms of paralysis are unable to move their limbs or speak, making it difficult for them to communicate with the outside world. BCI systems can allow these patients to control external devices such as wheelchairs or communication devices using their brain activity.
Neuromuscular diseases and Autoimmune conditions such as: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) significantly restrict patients’ physical movement. They also can cause speech impairments, even though the brain is generating signals that have potential to communicate.
